Recently I read and loved the book Neophyte. In case you missed my review, let me just tell you that I was absolutely lost in the story from the moment the words showed up on my Kindle screen. Absolutely one of THE BEST Angel books that I’ve read this year.

Emmalee has generously offered to gift a copy of Neophyte to two of my readers! Real simple entries too on the Rafflecopter.

NeophyteNeophyte by Emmalee Aple
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. Aple’s writing grips you from the moment you start reading about Addisyn and her Link. She has the ability to weave a spell as you turn page after page, your eyes hungry for more as you lose yourself in this book.

No, I’m not kidding. It took all of my Gryffindor willpower NOT to finish this in one sitting – I would force myself to put the book down to do mundane things such as make dinner, do the dishes, take a shower, pick the husband up for work and sleep.

Who needs sleep when you have a gripping Angel book to read?!

Addisyn has the ability to make you love and dislike her at the same time. Her Link does what they can to keep her safe, not even understanding completely who and what she is, but she tries to undermine them time and time again.

There were a few questions that I hope get explained in the sequel. One is, what exactly is a companion and how are you chosen to have one? In simple terms, I guess a companion would just be a friend, but Hunter seemed to be so much more than that to Addisyn. In fact, in my opinion, it’s like he was her Guardian Angel while she was human. I’d love to delve into who shot Addi and why – I know it was a school shooting, but what made that kid walk into the lunchroom and open fire? Did not even the Elders know that there is something special about Addi? That she possibly is the one to save new Angels from “Bad Angels” like Farron? How did Graham not know that Addi was going to leave them in the end? How…well, I could go on, but I’m sure that Ms. Aple will supply the answers in her new book.

Really, this is one of THE BEST BOOKS I have read all year. Even if you’re not religious or don’t like Angel books…READ THIS. It is an interesting take on Angels that I am so glad I came upon.

I was given a review copy of this book in exchange for my review. However, I would have happily paid for this book and still given it as glowing a review as I have. I am going to be waiting with eager anticipation for the sequel.

Welcome to this week’s installment of Sunday Shorts, a meme created by Kriss at Cabin Goddess. Sunday Shorts introduces our readers to a novella, short story or collection of short stories that can usually be gotten for cheap… or even free! Now on to my pick for this week:

From the back cover: Should a woman who’s unable to forget her first love give “happily ever after” one more try? Shelby Winters’ one great love went sour. If she can’t feel that way about a guy again, why bother? When Shelby’s best friend sets her up on a blind date with Logan, the guy who broke her heart, he pursues her relentlessly, forcing her to make a choice: give her heart what its always desired and risk total devastation, or shut Logan out and lose her only shot at happiness. To Shelby, it’s a lose-lose situation. Or is it?

Veronica Blade lives in Southern California with her husband and children. By day she runs the family business, but each night she slips away to spin her tales. She writes stories about young adults to relive her own childhood and to live vicariously through her characters. Except her heroes and heroines lead far more interesting lives – and they are always way hotter.

Learn more about Veronica Blade and her writing at her website.

The God BoxThe God Box by Mary Lou Quinlan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my review. All thoughts and opinions are mine and I wasn’t required to give a positive review if I didn’t care for the book.

Having just finished The God Box, I want to jump in my truck and drive up to my mother’s house to give her a big hug and share with her all of the emotions I felt while reading this memoir.

And to start my own God Box.

Mary Lou’s proudest achievement wasn’t her career, her marriage, or even being a friend. It was being the best daughter she could possibly be to her parents. Shortly after her mother dies from a stroke, Mary Lou, her brother Jack, and their father search out the oft-talked about God Box that Mary {their beloved mother//wife} Mary had kept prayer slips in. Looking in the most unlikely of places, Mary Lou finds not one, but ten non-descript boxes filled with the every worry and thought for everyone Mary had come in contact with.

The most inspiring thought I take away from this book is to offer up my worries and cares to God and then let them go. He is always listening and He does answer prayers. Though I may continue to struggle on this journey of letting things go, I will work hard to offer up a prayer and then let it go. Whatever happens, happens.

Grab a cup of coffee {or tea}, find a quiet, comfortable spot and settle down with this quick, but inspiring book. Before you know it, you’ll be looking for your own box to store slips of prayers in.

Even if you’re not religious or believe in something different, Mary Lou urges everyone to write down a care or worry, slip it into the box, and then release it. It’s the greatest lesson her mother taught her.

Who enjoys books with adventure, heroines with bizarre healing abilities, larger than life insects, evildoer bad guys, and the romantic prospect of love? This woman right here! So when I was asked if I would like a copy of this book, to read and review it in exchange for my honest critique, I was pleased to take on the task. Going by the summary above, this book seemed to coincide with my interests swimmingly!

The first few lines of Ethos: Morning Star absorbed me, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the exciting, and fantastic adventure that I was quickly caught in. The only blot on the story for me was the conspicuous presence of some obvious redundancies and editing mistakes, which nearly deterred me from continuing the book early on. Once the plot truly got rolling, Ms.Finkbeiner found her groove and more players entered scene. I am so very happy that I kept reading, because I genuinely ended up enjoying the universe and people that she so cleverly constructed!

The beginning of the story we find ourselves on Earth as a member every-day-life USA. With school, cars, classes, parents and all of life’s normal issues. As the reader we expect it to go on like that and have done. Only in this case we readers would be incorrect. Much in the way of The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland we are transported to the fantastical world of Ethos. Interestingly we learn that parts of those very stories are truth, and some of them untruths. There’s a few tidbits like the classic stories I previously mentioned and as Brianna learns about this strange new world that exists, we get to see all of the fun ways the Author ties in and reveals how our known sciences compare to Ethos’ own “Magic”. I was gratified to read a novel that visibly had a lot of thought put into the nuances.

Another thing I appreciated was that none of Finkbeiner’s characters came across cookie cutter or atypical. Each new addition to the cast had their very own voice. Even the insects and animals had their own mannerisms and behavior that made them endearing and unique. I loved both the main characters’ personality and temperament! The female lead, Brianna, is easily someone a person could imagine knowing. Her youthful naïveté, honest affection, and in some cases amusingly (in the first few chapters especially) one track 21yr old mind, seemed relatable. As the story progressed we get to witness Bree grow up, just a little bit at a time, with the unexpected weight of her responsibilities as well as see a forbidden love blossom despite the rules. The male lead, Kalen, was well depicted and likable. Being very much the champion he was meant to be: confident, charming, gentle and sensitive; but not in an annoying whingey-way. I liked the discourse between the antagonists. Their conversations didn’t come across as forced and everything flowed nicely along with the plot.

I ended up losing track of time and read this novel late into the night just to see what happened next. And now that I have completed it, I must attempt to wait patiently for the next volume to be released. I eagerly anticipate the return of our brave heroes!

Over all, this book was a fun read, and I would very much laud it to fans of this genre. There wasn’t much in way of violence described, and only some brief displays of innocent, PG, passion. This publication is very much worth the undervalued $2.99 price tag (Free right now for Amazon Prime Users). I mean come on, there’s also a David Bowie mullet reference that had this reviewer chuckling aloud. Priceless!

Have you read this novel? What do you, the readers think?

A month or so ago I started my own “meme” of sorts by posting up books that I’ve found via the local thrift store – in my case The Salvation Army. While nowadays I prefer my Kindle, there’s still something about a new paperback that brings a smile of contentment to my face.

This week’s find is . When I first looked on Amazon, it showed the original bookcover that I have, but they wanted about 30 dollars a paperback. I’m assuming it was reissued with a new cover which is what I’m sharing here.

From Amazon: A follow-up to Frank’s debut novel, Sullivan’s Island, this colorful contemporary romance effortlessly evokes the lush beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry while exploring the complexities of family relationships. When Caroline Wimbley Levine learns that her mother, Miss Lavinia, has supposedly gone mad, she leaves the big city bustle of Manhattan and returns to Tall Pines Plantation. Caroline originally left Tall Pines to escape her feisty, eccentric mother and her drunken brother, Trip, but when Miss Lavinia dies, Caroline is forced to come to terms with her family’s troubled history as well her failing relationship with her husband. As Caroline reminisces about her past rebelliousness and her childhood, she realizes that her father’s sudden and tragic death many years before served as a catalyst for the family’s disintegration. Caroline and Trip also learn that their seemingly selfish and self-assured mother was not so uncaring after all. While most of the story is told from Caroline’s point of view, journal entries written by Miss Lavinia open several of the chapters, providing the narrative with additional texture and warmth. Although the novel is short on plot, readers will enjoy immersing themselves in the lives of these deftly drawn, heartfelt characters.

I didn’t realize it was a follow-up book, so now I’ll have to get my hands on a copy of .

Have YOU found any books in your local thrift stores?

Charmeine (The Light-Bearer Series, #1)Charmeine by Emily Guido
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The premise for Charmeine is not one that I’ve read before; an Angel cast out of Heaven by God along with Lucifer by mistake, leaving behind his wife and their child. His wife, unable to contemplate an existence without her husband, leaves Heaven to be with him on Earth. Although, I have to be honest and say that the Christian in me keeps whispering that God doesn’t make mistakes.

I find the premise of this book to be rather unique as it’s not one that I’ve encountered before in a market saturated with repetitive themes. Tab, Shane, Dimitri, Charmeine, and Neal are all enjoyable characters. However, I do question how Tabbruis became a blood hunter after falling from Heaven. Maybe this question will be answered in the sequel.

While I liked the premise of this book, it would be irresponsible of me to with-hold the fact that this book is in need of an editor. I liked it, but it needs to be fine-tuned. There were a lot of grammatical mistakes along with repetitive scenes that just didn’t keep the story flowing as smooth as it could.

Please help me welcome new author Emily Guido as she stops by Once Upon A Book during her Charmeine blog tour!

Q: Emily, what was your inspiration for Charmeine?

A:I was thinking for a few months about a couple who had to battle Heaven and Hell to stay together! Yet they were not mortal! They made for each other but always seemed they had obstacle after obstacle but some wonderful and terrifying things happened to them during the process. But before that when I was little my big sis, Connie, had Leukemia. We used to watch the soap operas together in the afternoon like All My Children and Dark Shadows. She was all caught up in the men on the shows, I was too young to notice, but those stories of love, mystery, and terror seem to play like a movie in my mind. When Connie passed away, it left a hole in my heart but it left me with a passion for Paranormal Romance. A passion to write for Tabbruis and Charmeine and their love.

Q:Who are some of your favorite authors?

A:I love so my great authors but Dylan Thomas, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Bram Stoker, Teresa Lilly, Emily Brontë, Charlotte Brontë, Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, Guy de Maupassant, and present day Diana Gabaldon, and Felicity E. Heaton. I know it is quite an eclectic list, but I have tastes that are very broad.

Q:Did you have a lot of support from friends and family while you were writing?

A:Oh my Husband, Matt, for sure. It is just us and the three cats. We have no family in New Jersey because we moved here for his job. He is from Long Island but I’m from Southern Indiana. But Matt was very supportive and didn’t mind me typing until 2:00 a.m. or 3:00 a.m. listening to my songs playing in the background! He’s not a reader either. I forced him to read my book. Pretty funny really that I write and he hates reading.

Q:Is Charmeine self-published?

A:Oh yes, I got three books at Christmas 2011 on how to publish your novel. However, I did not get back anyone who said they would give Charmeine a chance to be read even. I was crying about it with my friends over a big bottle of wine one night at a pub close by. My friend said to go and put it on Amazon by myself. So, after my alcohol induced coma cleared in a couple hours, I sat down and emailed an author that I dearly love asking her how she did it, never thinking I would hear back ever! She answered me back within hours and not just a sentence or two but a long email! That was all the motivation I needed.

Q:Did you have to do a lot of religious research?

A:Too funny, no as a matter of fact! Born and raised Catholic, this kind of mysticism and concept are sort of inborn in the teachings of the Church. I took specific things from the Bible and incorporated them into the book like the Day of Judgment, the Lake of Fire and Torment, the Wrath of God, and the light of Angels who walk among us.

Q:Are you religious?

A:Yes; however, I am not super religious. I believe in the tenant to be good to one another and treat others how you would like to be treated. I think that commandment says it all.

Q:Do you have any advice for new writers?

A:Please just keep trying and do not give up. Remember Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Pinterest, and emails are your best friends. Be sure to blog every day snippets of your novel and make a trailer of your book. Read other people’s indie work and review it for them. Get to know the reviewers, bloggers, and other authors. Believe me it is true what they say, connections, connections, connections, the only way to make it in this business.

Q:What are your future plans?
A:I work full time at a college in Campus Life and go to MBA school full time also. I will have my MBA in January 2014! I hope to have all “The Light-Bearer Series” done by then and published. Then I will work on another Paranormal Romance series after that. I will be the only MBA writing about Paranormal Romance instead of General Ledger Reports, Physical Plant reconciliations and Budget Transfers…Hopefully!

A:Thank you, Emily, for stopping by today!

E:Thank you for letting me visit you today!

My WoW is…

When Penna Weaver’s boyfriend goes off to Iraq, she’s left facing life without him. As summer sets in, Penna tries to distract herself with work and her art, but the not knowing is slowly driving her crazy. Especially when David stops writing.

She knows in her heart he will come home. But will he be the same boy she fell in love with?

I first read about this book over at Emily’s Crammed Bookshelf while entering her Summer Lovin’ Blog Tour Giveaway. I fell in love with the beautiful cover of this book before I even knew what it was about. Thanks, Emily, for sharing!

But now that Dameon is finally pining for her affections, she is becoming more and more wrapped up in a clique of three who, as new transfers to the school, are proving to be trouble. But at least Dameon loves her, doesn’t he?

A Soul Purpose

Fall For You (The Jane Austen Academy Series #1: A Modern Retelling of Pride & Prejudice)Fall For You by Cecilia Gray
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fall For You reminds me of another book I read recently where the main character was self-absorbed and only cared about herself and how everything she did would get her into the college of choice. The only difference is, Lizzie learned to adapt and accept change. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Lizzie grow as the story progressed; too often it takes about a hundred pages or so until the main character finally opens his//her eyes and realize that they’ve been an idiot all along.

A Goodreads friend told me that she liked this book, but that it was too short. I agree with her, but I’m also looking forward to the sequel. One thing I really liked the most is that for the most part, everything gets resolved by the end so that there are no big cliffhangers, which is different from other series and sets apart Fall For You.

I look forward to getting to know Lizzie, Dante, Anne, Rich, Emma, Ellie, Georgiana and Edward a lot better as the series continues. Hopefully Ms. Berg disappears sometime in the future as that woman annoys me.

I recommend this for anyone who likes YA, wants a quick, enjoyable read, and who enjoys light-reading. Hopefully you’ve read some of Jane Austen’s works as apparently, Ms. Gray is a modern-day Austen. Now I have to dig through the classics and find Pride and Prejudice and finally read it. Yeah, yeah…I know.

Queer GreerQueer Greer by A.J. Walkley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Have you ever read a book that just had you saying WOW at the end?

WOW in a good way, that is.

WOW in the way that your brain was just put through the ringer because you had to think constantly throughout the whole book, constantly had to wonder how you would feel in the protagonist’s shoes. Constantly had to put yourself in the shoes of the supporting characters and see if you would react the same as they did, or if your reaction would be different.

Queer Greer is that book for me.

At first I wasn’t sure if I liked Greer, but as I learned more about her, walked in her shoes so to speak, I began to love her. I believe that her journey into discovering her sexuality is something that everyone goes through. A person’s sexuality is not black or white – it may be blue or pink or purple. Gay or straight or bisexual.

Greer, as so many people can attest to, tried to be straight when she met Cameron, but there was Becca. Gorgeous, confident, out and proud Becca. I’ve known – and dated – way too many Camerons in my lifetime. Guys who are all about breaking the rules, doing manly things, but never doing what they long to do deep down. Play the guitar. Sing in front of a crowd. I don’t think in my high school days that I knew many Beccas.

Queer Greer takes you on her journey from apparent “straight girl” to “secretly gay” to “the closet’s been open”. You may not agree with Greer’s tactics, you may not agree with how she copes, but you will feel her pain and frustration as she follows her path.

I would recommend this book to EVERYONE. Especially young teens who question their own sexuality or who aren’t sure that anyone else feels the way they do. Someone does, and they will help you through it. You just have to find that person.

I’m required to acknowledge that I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for my review, good or bad. I received no other compensation and wasn’t required to give it a positive review.

Recently there’s been a bit of controversy in the blogosphere over authors commenting on reviews – whether they be favorable, neutral, or negative in content. Nat from Reading-Romances has put together this educational event hop in the hopes that we bloggers will be able to express ourselves and educate everyone – authors and publishers as well – in what we expect or don’t expect. Thank you, Nat, for letting me be a part of this event!

I’d like to point out right from the start that we are ALL allowed our opinions and each of us have the freedom to agree or disagree. If you disagree with me, please keep any nasty comments to yourself as we’re all at least somewhat mature around here. *Grin*

As a relative newbie to review blogging, I was unsure about the controversy that has been brewing until I spoke to several blog friends who explained what has been happening. Again, these are MY opinions whether or not you like them.

I don’t think there should be any hype over an author messaging a reviewer with a simple “thanks for your review” or even leaving a comment on a review with a similar “thank you” message. Even if the review isn’t favorable of the book, you can still say “Thank you for your thoughtful review.” Maybe that type of interaction should be kept private, but I ask you this – if we can leave a message via Twitter, Facebook, comment on a post, etc. etc. saying “thank you for the great book you wrote.”, why shouldn’t they be able to return the favor? In my mind, it’s just common courtesy and respect.

However. If you read a book that you’re not overly fond of and write a scathing review calling the author names, that’s uncalled for. You’re reviewing a book, not the person who wrote it. If you don’t like the negative review, just remember that there’s always going to be a positive review around the corner…don’t get into a war of words on the Internet no matter how many times Peggy Sue called you an “idiot who needs to check her facts”. It’s just not worth it.

Do I feel pressured to write a glowing, positive review just because I know an author can see what I’ve rated their book? No, I don’t. I have several authors following me and I don’t feel bad when I hit the fourth star instead of the fifth star on Goodreads. In fact, as I stated in a review recently on there, I really wish that they’d change “it was amazing” to “love it” like what Amazon has. It’s not that I didn’t find their book engaging, witty, etc.; it just means that I didn’t find it absolutely amazing. We are all entitled to our opinions regardless of what anyone else thinks.

A huge pet peeve of mine is when an author will rate their book five stars and then review it! Of course you’re going to give it a glowing recommendation – you wrote it! I also am not fond of authors who will create another account to either A. attack a reviewer whose opinion they don’t like, or B. write glowing recommendations just so that their book is bumped up a bit on charts. No, that’s wrong.

Whether you agree with me or not, I just don’t see the big deal with an author giving a reviewer a simple “thank you” in appreciation. Check out what other bloggers are saying by clicking the links below. Thank you again, Nat, for letting me be a part of this event.
