March 22nd, 2012Review: Sweetbriar – Jude Deveraux
Sweetbriar by Jude Deveraux
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Linnet’s family is killed before her when Indians raid the campground where they were resting before trekking further along with several other adults. She’s kidnapped along with six other children and taken back to the area where the other Indians are waiting. The males are angered when they realize that Linnet is not, in fact, a child, but a young woman. Before she can be raped, a half-Shawnee, half-American man by the name of Mac {Devon to Linnet} rescues her in a duel with another Indian. He takes her back to Sweetbriar where he has his own general store. She promises to teach him to read and cook for him in exchange for a cabin and material to make clothes. Devon is bullheaded like most males and believes the worst about Lynna, as the townspeople lovingly call her, even though she’s never given him a reason to believe anything bad of her.
Apparently it’s Jude Deveraux month in my neck of the woods as this is the fourth book I’ve read by her this month – second this week, even. I love how all of the women protagonists are so strong and independent. Lynna is no different. She says it like it is and doesn’t care who likes it. She’s not afraid to work or to go off and start anew on her own if she has to. This is another book by Ms. Deveraux that I’d love to see a follow-up to.
